How To Study The Bible Using The SOAP Method

If you want to discover the heart of God and His will for your life then reading and studying His word is KEY. There are many methods for studying God’s word and the SOAP Bible Study Method is one them.

Gods Word says that:

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

If we want to seek God’s heart and will for our lives, then it is crucial that we seek to learn and understand His Word.

The SOAP Bible study method

The SOAP Bible study method has become a very popular method for studying God’s Word and can be found all over the internet.

When I first started to dig deeper into the Word of God I found the process incredibly intimidating. I didn’t know where to start, how to start, or if I was even doing it right.

But my friend! God isn’t bothered by any of that. All he asks from us is obedience. To seek Him and to want to spend time with Him. He graciously fills in the gaps.

The SOAP Bible study method is great if you’re new to Bible study because:

  • Its easy to learn.
  • It doesn’t take a lot of time, and
  • You will experience incredible benefit from the practice of studying Gods Word.

The SOAP Bible study method works well for small portions of scripture and fits well into a morning devotion / quiet time.

Each letter of ‘SOAP’ stands for a simple step in this Bible study process.

You don’t need much to get started. All you will need is your Bible, a notebook and a pen. I have also put together a beautiful PRINTABLE to get you started.

Before You Begin

I encourage you to begin your Bible study with a time of prayer. Ask the Lord for wisdom as you read through His word and for the Holy Spirit to reveal His truths as you seek His kingdom.

Before you begin you will need to decide on a passage of scripture. There are few ways to do this. You could:

  • Work through a devotional
  • Choose a book of the Bible to work through
  • Focus on the passages of scripture being taught in your church

I recommend that you don’t “hop around” the Bible; You will gain deeper meaning through working through a book or theme of the Bible.

Having a BIBLE STUDY PLAN  is incredibly helpful. You will find it easier to form a Bible study habit when you have a plan to follow.

The next step is to read through your chosen passage a couple of times. Read through a few different translations. This isn’t hard to do at all. There are many online Bibles that make this super easy to do.

After you have read the passage a couple of times. Choose a translation that you are comfortable with and 2-3 verses that are meaningful or stand out to you and write the scripture down.

The next step in the SOAP Bible study method is ‘Observation’.

Ask the questions:

  • Who wrote this passage?
  • Who was it written to?
  • What is the Author saying? What is the message?
  • What words or phrases stand out to me?
  • What does this passage show me about who God is?
  • What does this passage say about who man is?

Write down what you observe.

After you have gone through the process of observation, the next step is application.

The ultimate aim of studying the Word of God is sanctification – learning and becoming more like God.

Ask yourself:

“How can I apply these verses to my life?”

“How can I respond in light of this truth?”

Ask the Lord to reveal areas in your life where you can apply these new found truths and ask him to help you as apply these truths to your life.

I hope that you have been blessed by this post and feel confident to explore the scriptures using the SOAP Bible study method.

  1. Hey Kerry,

Thank you for sharing these insights. Here are a few more questions that my wife and I use when studying scripture with our kids. I’ve heard them called discovery questions because they helps us to engage in God’s word, open up conversations, and discover truth together:

What do you like about the passage?
    What do you dislike?
What do you want to know more about?
What does this passage teach you about God?
How does this passage challenge you live differently?

These questions have really helped our younger children start to think about the Bible. Maybe they can be helpful to your readers as well.

How do you feel?
